Te Rito

Te Rito Courses 1-7

Welcome to the Te Rito Bicultural Competency E-Learning Modules, an exciting new resource for increasing bicultural knowledge, skill and comfort.

There are seven courses of Te Rito, comprising 44 interactive modules. Courses 1-4 focus on building bicultural competency: courses 5-7 (30 new modules launched in 2023) explore issues of decolonisation, equity and anti-racism as they relate to Aotearoa and to the workplace. You can read more about Courses 5-7 here: https://www.kiamaia.org.nz/course/te-rito-course-five-demo/

For all our modules, we have used best practice e‑learning techniques that ensure technology enhances the learning process rather than distracting from it. We’ve also rigorously tested the modules to ensure they deliver an effective, intellectually robust and enjoyable experience for users.

The modules can be deployed through a learning management system (LMS), providing the ability to track user progress so learning can be seen, measured and acknowledged. In the absence of your own LMS, we can offer access to our online hosted system, giving you  administrative control.

These e-learning modules provide clearly scaffolded learning for users, including cumulative glossaries and independent learning tools that can be returned to after completion and used over and over again to assist understanding and build skills.

Completion of Courses 1-4 will provide a clear benchmark of bicultural competence within your organisation. Courses 5-7 will give staff new perspectives and information as well as opportunities for further learning. These three new courses are designed to encourage deeper reflection as well as action, working towards an equitable Aotearoa that honours Te Tiriti in practice, not just in words.

Very simple to download and install, the modules run through a Learning Management System (LMS), providing the useful ability to track users’ progress.

The format of the modules allows a level of theme development not possible in the original Te Rito. Each module explores facts, perspectives and related issues in a way that engages the user and encourages him or her to relate the information to their own ideas and experiences.

All fourteen modules follow the same basic structure:

  • Introduction of key concepts
  • Examples of these concepts in New Zealand life, particularly in the workplace
  • An interactive tool to provide the opportunity to master the new concepts and skills, and
  • A brief learning assessment quiz that must be passed in order to complete the module.

System Requirements

The modules have been designed to run in a standard SCORM compliant Learning Management System. Te Rito can be accessed via our own Learning Management System or through a licensee’s organisational LMS, depending on which is more convenient. The modules are compatible with most Learning Management Systems.

The minimum system requirements for playing the modules are:

Windows System

  • 1GHz or faster Intel Pentium 4, Intel Centrino, Intel Xeon, or Intel Core Duo (or compatible) processor
  • 2GB of RAM minimum
  • Multimedia graphics and sound capability
  • 1024×768 screen resolution

Mac OS

  • Multicore Intel processor
  • 2GB of RAM minimum
  • 1024×768 screen resolution

The above systems need to be connected to the Licensee’s LMS system (or other delivery system) using a modern browser (IE9 minimum for Windows and the latest version of Safari for Mac).

The Te Rito modules range in size from 12MB to approximately 30MB so the LMS or other system needs to be able to accommodate modules of this size. Some modules may contain video files.
