Te Rito

In 2002 we launched Te Rito, our original bicultural training resource specifically designed for the public sector, in response to an identified need.

Te Rito helps people develop their own bicultural competencies and gain a better understanding of Māori perspectives. Many government and non-government organisations are currently licensed to use Te Rito, which consistently receives positive feedback.

Te Rito is designed to extend and reinforce current responsiveness to Māori training and give employees the building blocks they need to improve their relationships with Māori colleagues, stakeholders, clients and communities.

The strength of having an ongoing training tool is that information can be absorbed, refreshed and practiced in the user’s own time and at his or her own pace. There are a variety of multimedia features that allow users to select their particular learning style (for example visual and/or aural).

The key features of Te Rito are its use of multimedia to make learning fun, as well as its robust and comprehensive nature.

Te Rito covers five key areas: Tikanga Māori, The Treaty of Waitangi, Communication with Māori Audiences, Te Reo Māori and The Marae. The content of Te Rito has been peer reviewed by people who are considered experts in their fields, such as Dr Huirangi Waikerepuru (Tikanga), Ian Cormack and staff at Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori (Te Reo) and Moana Jackson (the Treaty of Waitangi). The Treaty section has also been reviewed by the Ministry of Justice.

System Requirements

Te Rito uses Adobe AIR.  Adobe AIR is a cross-operating system runtime that lets developers combine HTML, JavaScript, Adobe Flash® and Flex technologies, and ActionScript® to deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) on a broad range of devices including desktop computers, netbooks, tablets, smartphones, and TVs.

AIR works across a variety of operating systems. A web browser enables a user to interact with content and applications typically located on a website on a server. AIR builds upon capabilities and technologies used in the browser to enable deployment of applications on the desktop. AIR complements the browser by providing users and developers with a choice about how to deliver and use applications built with web technologies.

For those interested in how Adobe Air compares with Flash Player, AIR incorporates technologies originally developed in Flash Player and enables RIAs on the desktop. AIR and Flash Player provide complementary deployment methods for RIAs.
